Democracy Is…Free Speech

I made this video as part of a scholarship where I had to write an essay and make a movie to explain to the next US president what free speech means in today’s society. I decided to combine the two. Freedom of speech s the concept that it is every man, woman, and child’s God given right to express ourselves without fear of censorship. However, the term speech is not limited to the spoken word, but to all forms of public expression. Nowhere is this more prominent than in the new media, specifically the internet; where all ideals are accepted and allowed to be. With this new form of expression comes a new form of responsibility that the public all too often takes for granted. Crackpot theories and biased beliefs are put forth as fact. It’s all too easy for the inexperienced viewer to be consumed by it. On the opposite end of the spectrum, it is even easier for something that has been presented under freedom of speech in the new media to be misinterpreted. Therefore, it’s obvious that while providing a new outlet for expression, the new media has no boundaries. There is no way to control this regardless of regulations and rules. The only thing anyone can do is watch and anticipate the future.
